Miraculous Medal Story and its Meaning Print E-mail

Written by Ooh-la-la Beadtique

The Blessed Virgin herself designed the Medal of the Immaculate Conception—popularly known as the Miraculous Medal! No wonder, then, that it wins such extraordinary graces for those who wear it and pray for Mary's intercession and help.

1st ApparitionThe First Apparition

The story begins on the night of July 18-19, 1830. A child (perhaps her guardian angel) awakened Sister (now Saint) Catherine Labouré, a novice in the community of the Daughters of Charity in Paris, and summoned her to the chapel. There she met with the Virgin Mary and spoke with her for several hours. During the conversation, Mary said to her, "My child, I am going to give you a mission."

2nd Apparition

The Second Apparition

Mary gave her this mission in a vision during evening meditation on November 27, 1830. She saw Mary standing on what seemed to be half a globe and holding a golden globe in her hands as if offering it to heaven. On the globe was the word "France", and our Lady explained that the globe represented the whole world, but especially France. The times were difficult in France, especially for the poor who were unemployed and often refugees from the many wars of the time. France was first to experience many of those troubles which ultimately reached other parts of the world and are even present today. Streaming from rings on Mary's fingers as she held the globe were many rays of light. Mary explained that the rays symbolize the graces she obtains for those who ask for them. However, some of the gems on the rings were dark, and Mary explained that the rays and graces were available but did not come because no one had asked for them.

3rd Apparition

The Third Apparition and the Miraculous Medal

The vision then changed to show our Lady standing on a globe with her arms now outstretched and with the dazzling rays of light still streaming from her fingers. Framing the figure was an inscription: O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Front of the Miraculous Medal
The Meaning of the Front Side of the Miraculous Medal

Mary is standing upon a globe, crushing the head of a serpent beneath her foot. She stands upon the globe, as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her feet crush the serpent to proclaim Satan and all his followers are helpless before her (Gn 3:15). The year of 1830 on the Miraculous Medal is the year the Blessed Mother gave the design of the Miraculous Medal to Saint Catherine Labouré. The reference to Mary conceived without sin supports the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary—not to be confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, and referring to Mary's sinlessness, "full of grace" and "blessed among women" (Luke 1:28)—that was proclaimed 24 years later in 1854.

The vision turned and showed the design of the reverse side of the medal. Twelve stars encircled a large "M" from which arose a cross. Below are two hearts with flames arising from them. Thorns encircle one heart and a sword pierces the other.

Back of the Miraculous Medal
The Meaning of the Back Side of the Miraculous Medal

The twelve stars can refer to the Apostles, who represent the entire Church as it surrounds Mary. They also recall the vision of Saint John, writer of the Book of Revelation (12:1), in which "a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars." The cross can symbolize Christ and our redemption, with the bar under the cross a sign of the earth. The "M" stands for Mary, and the interleaving of her initial and the cross shows Mary’s close involvement with Jesus and our world. In this, we see Mary’s part in our salvation and her role as mother of the Church. The two hearts represent the love of Jesus and Mary for us. (See also Lk 2:35).

Then Mary spoke to Catherine: "Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck." Catherine explained the entire series of apparitions to her confessor, and she worked through him to carry out Mary’s instructions. She did not reveal that she received the Medal until soon before her death 47 years later.

With approval of the Church, the first Medals were made in 1832 and were distributed in Paris. Almost immediately the blessings that Mary had promised began to shower down on those who wore her Medal. The devotion spread like wildfire. Marvels of grace and health, peace and prosperity, followed in its wake. Before long people were calling it the "Miraculous" Medal. In 1836, a canonical inquiry undertaken at Paris declared the apparitions to be genuine.

There is no superstition, nothing of magic, connected with the Miraculous Medal. The Miraculous Medal is not a "good-luck charm". Rather, it is a great testimony to faith and the power of trusting prayer. Its greatest miracles are those of patience, forgiveness, repentance, and faith. God uses a Medal, not as a sacrament, but as an agent, an instrument, in bringing to pass certain marvelous results. "The weak things of this earth hath God chosen to confound the strong."

I came across Dermapeutics Resveraderm anti-oxidant firming and lifting facial serum at the Winners Beauty department. I wasn’t familiar with the Dermapeutics products at all, but the product packaging had me intrigued. The facial serum box was labeled “parabenParabenA group of commonly used cosmetic/personal care product ingredients generally referred to as “Parabens” are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and common parabens include: ethyl, methylparaben/methyl (which can occur naturally in blueberries), propylparaben/propyl, butylparaben/butyl. Less common are isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben/isopropyl and benzylparaben. They are ingredients known as preservatives that are highly effective in preventing the growth of fungi and bacteria and are used to preserve products and greatly extend their shelf life.
Although parabens are generally considered safe when used in low percentages (.04% - .08%), many studies have found a link between parabens and breast cancer.Because parabens mimic human estrogen and it is known that estrogen stimulates cancer, the link seemed plausible.

The other reason to avoid parabens is environmental damage. According the Environmental Protection Agency: "the continual introduction of these benzoates (parabens) into sewage systems and directly to recreational waters from the skin leads to the question of risk to aquatic organs." So be nice to fish and use alternatives where possible.

As a woman I’m always concern about breast cancer, and I try to avoid products that contain parabenParabenA group of commonly used cosmetic/personal care product ingredients generally referred to as “Parabens” are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and common parabens include: ethyl, methylparaben/methyl (which can occur naturally in blueberries), propylparaben/propyl, butylparaben/butyl. . Other thing that captivated me, were the fruit images on the packaging, which suggested that fruit extracts are part of the serum’s ingredient content. Quickly I’ve scanned through the ingredient list. Several of them were plant extracts and I’m a big fan of herbs, fruits and other natural ingredients. Pleased with its content I’ve decided to drop the serum into my shopping basket. Here is the full list of the ingredients:

Water,Aqua,Water is used in the formulation of virtually every type of cosmetic and personal care product. Water is primarily used as a solvent in cosmetics and personal care products in which it dissolves many of the ingredients that impart skin benefits, such as conditioning agents and cleansing agents. Water also forms emulsions in which the oil and water components of the product are combined to form creams and lotions. These are sometimes referred to as oil-in-water emulsions or as water-in-oil depending on the ratios of the oil phase and water phase.

GlycerinGlycerinGlycerin is a sugar alcohol that can be obtained from natural sources or can be synthesized. In cosmetics and personal care products Glycerin is often used to slow the loss of moisture from a product during its use.

PolyacrylamidePolyacrylamidePolyacrylamide is a polymer of acrylamide monomers. It is used in cosmetics and beauty products in two different forms, either as a soft gel in its cross-linked form, which has highly water-absorbent properties, or in its straight-chain form, as a thickener and suspending agent. It has also been used recently as an active ingredient in the subdermal wrinkle filler, Aquamid.

Polyacrylamide is an ingredient in a variety of cosmetic and beauty products, including skin cleansers, moisturizers, lotions and creams, self tanning products, makeup, and hair care and nail care products. It dries to form a thin coating on the skin, hair, or nails; in hair care products, it helps hair hold its style by inhibiting the hair’s ability to absorb moisture; in makeup, it holds together the ingredients of a compressed tablet or cake; in sunscreen products, it aids in retaining sunscreen on the skin after immersion in water. Small Polyacrylamide beads may also be used in skin cleansing products as an abrasive.

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is a pentapeptide, synethsized chain protein created by linking five amino acid peptides. This chain creates a response in the dermis of the skin that stimulates collagen and elastin fibroblasts, developing fibronectin (FN) and glycosaminoglycans (GAG), according to research. Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is a small molecule that penetrates the skin easily and is structurally similar to the precursor of collagen type I. It is thought that pentapeptides can communicate with a cell and program it to do specific things, including repair work.Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is considered to be as effective against wrinkles as retinol, but less irritating.

At the very affordable price, the product packaging is very decent. In fact more than some other brand names, who package many of their expensive beauty products in plastic jars and containers. Dermapeutics Resveraderm anti-oxidant firming and lifting facial serum comes in a nice glass bottle with an eye-dropper type of applicator with the rubber nib on top of the lid. The dropper makes it very easy to control the amount of serum dispensed and applied to the face.

I'm very sensitive to smells and generally don't like products on my face to have any scent at all, if possible. I discovered that Dermapeutics Resveraderm anti-oxidant firming and lifting facial serum had a very pleasant (and very light) fruity scent. The serum itself was not too watery, and not too thick or greasy either, it was somewhere in the middle.  It spread on very easily, and it left my skin silky smooth and soft without any film residue.

First few days using the Dermapeutics Resveraderm anti-oxidant firming and lifting facial serum, I’ve noticed slight improvement in my skin tone. I’ve kept on using the serum twice a day, morning and night as directed. After a month my skin started looking visibly better.  The serum evened out my skin texture, brightened my skin, reduced my laugh lines, and firmed my skin. I accredit it all to its ingredient plant cocktail.

Resveraderm combines several potent plant extracts, Camellia Sinensis Leaf ExtractCamellia Sinensis Leaf ExtractAn extract of the leaves of the tea plant camellia sinensis. It has been reported in numerous studies to be one of the most potent natural chemopreventive agents inhibiting the cellular processes associated with tumor development, including initiation, promotion, and progression. It also has significant anti-inflammatory, cancer-fighting and anti-aging properties. In cosmetics and personal care it is used as an antioxidant agent, an anti-inflammatory, skin lightening & brightening agent, and sun damage repair agent.
from red grapes, Macrocystis Pyrifera ExtractMacrocystis Pyrifera ExtractMacrocystis Pyrifera Extract is an extract of a giant brown seaweed, Macrocystis Pyrifera, found in the Antarctic. According to research, sea kelp as a whole is thought to be useful in skin care products thanks to its high iodine, vitamin and mineral content. It is considered an anti-septic and anti-irritant that can not only heal sun-damaged skin, but can prevent wrinkles. It is also used in beauty products because of its gelatinous quality that adds shine to hair and glow to skin.

Dermapeutics Resveraderm anti-oxidant firming and lifting facial serum is one of my favourite facial serums, and I give it solid 5 star review.
